Hooded Blanket or Dressing Gown? How to Choose

Hooded Blanket or Dressing Gown? How to Choose

A dressing gown (or robe) and a hooded blanket can look alike, and both are made for slow time at home. They are built for different moments, though. Here is how they compare, so you can pick the one that suits the way you relax.

The quick difference

A dressing gown usually opens at the front and ties with a belt. It is made to slip on and off quickly. A hooded blanket pulls on over your head like a hoodie, with a big hood, wide sleeves and an oversized, blanket-like fit. It is made for settling in.

Choose a dressing gown if…

  • You want something to throw on and take off quickly.
  • You like an open front that ties at the waist.
  • You want something lighter to move around the house in.

Choose a hooded blanket if…

  • You want to feel wrapped up, like you are under a blanket, but with your hands free.
  • You love pulling a hood up while you watch something or read.
  • You often feel cold while sitting still.

The in-between: a zip hooded blanket

If you like the open front of a dressing gown but want the hood, length and soft layers of a hooded blanket, try a Zip Haven. It has a single full-front zip, so you can step in and zip up, and two front pockets. Our zip vs pullover guide explains more.

Picking the right length

Our lengths are measured from the shoulder. The classic Haven is 96 cm (38 in). The Long Haven is 130 cm (51 in), with a kangaroo pocket. Full Length Havens, including the Starry Elegance Haven, are 140 cm (55 in) with two front pockets. For kids, Youth Havens are 84 cm (33 in) and Toddler Havens 64 cm (25 in). Fit depends on your height, so measure from the top of your shoulder to where you'd like the hem to sit, and compare with the size guide.

Quick answers

Is a hooded blanket a dressing gown?

No. A hooded blanket pulls on (or zips up) and is looser, with a bigger hood. A dressing gown usually wraps and ties.

Should I choose a hooded blanket or a dressing gown?

It depends on the moment. For quick on and off, a dressing gown suits. For settling in on the couch, a hooded blanket suits. A Haven is a hooded blanket, not a dressing gown. If you want a front opening on a hooded blanket, choose a Zip Haven.

What is the difference between a hooded blanket and a blanket hoodie?

There is none. They are two names for the same thing. Read What Is a Hooded Blanket? to learn more.
